About
Space: The Story is a fan-made comic set in a universe of Lego space sets. I wanted to tell some hard-sci-fi stories and to do that well, I needed an internally consistent universe for them. I've had an interest in Lego space since the early classic-space era, and for fun I wanted to use these sets to tell the stories. In doing so I tried to ret-con the very loose existing lore and sets into a coherent set of convincing characters and history.
One of the most challenging things about a Lego space universe is that most of the craft are tiny, without enclosed cabins. Many of the ideas and aliens don't fit into a near-term, single-solar-system setting like The Expanse. But how can we possibly have interstellar travel on craft no larger than a motorbike or a mobile home? This universe tries to make that work.
I also wanted to explore some of the fundamental mysteries of the universe as we know it today, such as the increasingly acute Fermi paradox. I believe it's increasingly acute because the more we learn about exo-planets and even exo-moons, the more we confirm that the conditions in our solar system aren't particularly unusual. Meanwhile, the more we learn about the origins of life, the easier that seems to be too. The ingredients are everywhere. We might even discover an independent origin of life within our own solar system.
Finally, as the barriers to human-level AI crumble, it looks ever more feasible to fill the galaxy with self-replicating von-Neumann probes without ever needing faster-than-light travel. As we learn more, the emptiness of the universe becomes even more difficult to explain. A near-future setting is also a great place to imagine what a future co-existence with human-level AI might look like, which is particularly relevant right now.
In a Lego space universe, aliens are already commonplace, but at near-peer levels of technology. How can that coincidence be explained? Read Space: The Story to find out.
Inspiration
This site was inspired by many fantastic Lego space creations and stories. I recommend:
- Space: The comic. I thoroughly enjoyed the witty storytelling and characters, some of whom may have leaked into this universe.
- Classic Space Adventure game (play for free in-browser)
- Jim Spaceborn: The unknown galaxy. An official but non-canon early comic which saw the introduction of the Space Agency and early Blacktron spies before they had their official names.
- Ludgonious: Follow the adventures of hapless reporter Doog as he catalogues the dystopian Ludgonian Industrial Union.
- 1980somethingspace.com - a catalogue of many sets
- Eurobricks sci-fi forum. Home to thousands of Lego space MOCs (My Own Creations).
